01Defrost System
What It Costs to Fix Frost That Keeps Coming Back
Parts and labour, this repair
$270–$610
Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor
The heater that clears the evaporator, and the sensor or thermostat that tells the control when to run it. They fail separately, and they are reached through the same rear panel.
$300–$620
Door gasket or seal replacement
Freezer doors and freezer drawers both seal with a magnetic gasket in a channel. The range covers the seal, the fitting and the door or drawer alignment that usually has to be reset with it.
$340–$720
Evaporator or condenser fan motor
Two different motors sit under one band: the evaporator fan inside the frozen compartment, and the condenser fan in the machine bay. Access decides where in the range a job lands.
The visit itself is $89, and that comes off the repair the moment you say go. Everything above is the work that follows, on your cabinet, agreed as one figure first.
What is included
- A reading at the seal line and one at the coil, taken on the same visit
- The defrost circuit metered end to end while the coil is clear
- Airflow proved at the duct with the compartment empty
- Gauges on the ports only where the first three come back good
What changes the price
- Which of the causes it turns out to be, since each carries its own band
- Whether two of them are running together, which the frost pattern usually shows
- How much ice has to come off before anything can be measured honestly
Four causes, and the band each one lands in
| Where the frost comes from | What gets replaced | Which band above |
|---|---|---|
| The cycle that clears the coil has stopped | The heater, or the part sensing for it | The defrost row |
| Room air leaking past a door or drawer | The seal, and the alignment with it | The seal row |
| Air barely moving across a clear coil | A fan motor, in the box or in the bay | The fan row |
| Charge lost from the closed circuit | Sealed-system work | Neither — see the cost hub |
Reading the pattern before anyone arrives
Where the ice sits narrows this before a meter comes out. A glaze across the rear panel is the defrost circuit. A rim of white around the opening is room air getting in. A compartment that stays hard at the floor and turns mild at eye level is air not being moved.
Two causes at once is common, and it is why the visit measures all three rather than stopping at whichever one looks guilty first. Averaging four bands into a single phone figure would be the easy thing to do here, and it would be wrong in three cases out of four.
Where this goes next
The commonest of the four has its own page:a frost sheet on the back wall.
When the circuit itself is dead, the job and its figure are onthe defrost heater page.
Four causes cannot be averaged into one quote, which is whatthe flat visit exists to prevent.
Asked before the visit
Can I just keep defrosting it twice a year?
You can, and plenty of households do. It costs you a morning each time, the food gets moved twice, and the part underneath carries on failing. Where the frost is coming from a seal it is also running the compressor harder than it needs, because the compartment fights warm room air all day.
How do you tell the four apart in one visit?
By where the ice is and what the meter says, in that order. Frost at the edge points at the seal, frost on the panel at the defrost circuit, a warm top at the fan, and a clean sweep of all three sends us to the gauges. Sub-Zero Repair Experts Los Angeles, (310) 496-3358.

We were getting maybe a dozen cubes a day through a hot stretch. Scale had crusted the fill tube and the bin sensor was filthy. He cleaned both out and the bin fills properly now.

We bought the house with a wine column already in the island and it never held below the mid sixties. A dying condenser fan and years of dust behind the lower vent. Runs properly cold now.
Greta O.Studio City
Narrow hillside kitchen, and the column sits between cabinets with a finger of clearance. He eased it out, fitted a new start relay, and slid it back unmarked.
